Mining will continue for at least the next 12 years at the West Wallsend colliery, under a proposal put forward by Oceanic Coal.
The company plans to extract 5.5-million tonnes of coal using longwall methods, and has requested to continue operations 24-7.
An environmental assessment will be released tomorrow.
