The Pacific Highway speed limit could be reduced to 40 kilometres an hour near Charlestown Square, to improve pedestrian safety.

A Lake Macquarie Council study has also suggested slashing the road from six to four lanes.

  1. Any move to slow and constrict the traffic through Charlestown will push traffic onto other routes, including the upgraded backstreet route from Gateshead through to Highfields and Charlestown Bypass/Carnley Ave. The lights at the top of Carnley Ave have already had a 2nd turn lane added. If this happens, the extension of Waran Rd from Whitebridge through to Kahibah and widening of Carnley Ave to 4 lanes over it’s entire length will be needed.

The East Charlestown bypass (which the RTA officially shelved a few years ago for political reasons but have retained ownership and control of) will urgently need to be built. Belmont already has a 40 zone and it desperately needs its bypass, which is also officially shelved but still zoned as a road corridor.
