SINGLETON GRENADE SCARE

The discovery of a World War Two hand grenade prompted evacuations at Singleton in the Hunter today.

A 200-metre exclusion zone was set up around a normally quiet neighbourhood near the centre of town.

It’s thought the grenade, probably a wartime souvenir, had sat undisturbed in a shed for decades until being found by a home’s new owners.

Defence weapons experts eventually confirmed the grenade had been disarmed, and posed no threat.
