WORLD FIRST TRIAL TO TACKLE CANNABIS ADDICTION

Doctors in the Hunter are part of a world-first trial, aimed at helping people to stop smoking cannabis.

Along with doctors in Sydney they are testing multiple sclerosis drug Sativax, to treat cannabis addiciton…More below video.

It’s a drug that has never before been used in Australia.

While detox treatments for heroin and alcohol are common, it’s the first trial to find a treatment for cannabis dependency, a problem that has been increasing steadily.

Last year more than 600 people in the Hunter requested help with their cannabis addiction, but it is estimated that 50,000 people in the region have used the drug in the past 12 months.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
Similar to a nicotine patch, Sativax is designed to take the edge off withdrawal symptoms.

The drug is a combination of two components that exist in cannabis, THC and cannabidiol.

Peter Muhleisen is the trial pharmacist and says that in the right proportion and in reduced amounts the drug might suppress withdrawal symptoms which can range from depressive symptoms to agitation.

It is administered through a mouth spray – as easy as a few sprays in the mouth several times a day.

WHAT DOES THE TRIAL INVOLVE?
Patients involved in the trial spend a week in Belmont hospital where they receive the drug along with counselling.

They are given a measured amount of the drug four times a day, with the amount reducing everyday.

Patients will also be asked research questions about how they feel and how the medication is effecting them.

Even though it is still in the testing stage, researchers are hopeful it’s the answer they are looking for to fight cannabis addiction.

Researchers are now seeking more volunteers to take part in the trial.
