WEATHER: LATEST ON THE UPCOMING EAST COAST LOW

We are going to witness the collision of the two big air masses that produces the infamous, dangerous weather systems for eastern Australia. An upper level cold pool is set make its way across inland Australia, producing heavy rain for North West NSW. At this point, the heaviest rain is set to fall west of Kaputar, but be aware this forecast may change and the band could drift further east. Along the coast, a trough is deepening, drawing massive amounts of moisture off a very warm East Australian Current. Sea surface temperatures are above average due to the recent El Nino. This is helping to fuel the developing system. It is expected that the two air masses will collide Friday into Saturday, with heavy rain, potentially flooding rain, to fall on the Gold Coast and south east QLD, before spilling …

WEATHER: FLOODING RAIN TO THREATEN COASTAL COMMUNITIES

A deepening trough along the east coast has the potential to spin into an East Coast Low. This event may cause widespread coastal flooding from southeast QLD to the Mid North Coast and Newcastle communities. At this point, the Northern Rivers is most likely to be hit hardest and preparations should begin. The event is expected to peak at the end of the week and across the weekend. Localised flash flooding and widespread river flooding will be possible. I will update the developments of this system daily.

WEATHER: GOOD RAIN FOR THE NORTH WEST

A lovely rain band has swept across the North West today, with the better falls coming down where they are needed most. The system will clear tomorrow for a return to mostly sunny days, but there is a catch. The winds will get stronger and colder, as an east coast low forms over the weekend. The fronts will have little to no moisture left in them by the time they arrive so conditions are set to remain dry for the next few days.

WEATHER: DRY APRIL COMING TO AN END

It’s been another very dry, warm month for most of the region. Only northern NSW and southeast QLD has been receiving consistent showers. Finally some inland rain is on the way in May. A moisture-laden system is going to move in across southern NSW right at the end of the month. It will spread across the North West to make for a wet start to the month – decent rain hasn’t fallen here since January. It’s been very warm, with consistent above average temperatures for the Hunter as well this month, so rain is also now needed there too.
