UPDATE: ALLEGED MURDERER REFUSED BAIL

A nurse, accused of killing two elderly women in a Ballina nursing home, has been refused bail in the New South Wales Supreme Court.

Megan Haines allegedly murdered 82-year-old Marie Darragh and 77-year-old Isobella Spencer by administering fatal doses of insulin last May.

Haines is also facing an assault charged after another 88-year-old woman was hospitalised.

All three were residents of the St Andrew Village aged care home.

Haines appeared via video link in court today.

Her lawyer Michael Blair described the Crown case as so weak it was “barely above speculation”.

“The motive put forward by the Crown is financial gain and concern for her employment,” he told the court.

“But there is nothing in the brief to show that the applicant was going to gain one cent from these deaths.”

A bail decision will be handed down at 2pm.
