POLICE INVESTIGATE ALLEGED ANGLICAN SEX ASSAULTS

Police are calling for victims of historical child sex assaults in Newcastle to come forward.

Strike Force Arinya-2 is investigating allegations of child sexual assault by those associated with the Newcastle Diocese of the Anglican Church in the 1970s, including the handling of child sexual assault allegations.

Police are urging anyone who may have been a victim or had knowledge of child sexual assault in the diocese during the 1970s to contact Strike Force Arinya-2.

The church has offered the following statement.

The Bishop of Newcastle, Bishop Greg Thompson, pledged today the full support of the Diocese in response to the NSW Police investigation called Arinya-2.
“I continue to be saddened by the reality of abuse experienced by people and I am committed to ensuring justice and support for each of them” Bishop Thompson said.
He encouraged of victims of abuse to contact the Police. They may also contact the Diocesan Director of Professional Standards on 1800 774 945, who can arrange counselling or other support.
