DOMA PROPOSES CAR PARK ABOVE NEWCASTLE BUS INTERCHANGE

Newcastle residents will have their say on plans for a five-storey carpark at the former Store site in Wickham, at tonight’s council meeting. The $20-million project by developers Doma would sit above the new bus interchange on Hunter Street. It would feature close to 700 car spaces, but only be used for public parking for 18 months. Doma says, if its adjacent residential and commercial development is approved, the carpark will be used for those tenants and businesses.

FOUR NEW CLASSROOMS FOR NEWCASTLE EAST PUBLIC SCHOOL

Newcastle East Public School is about to get a long overdue spruce-up. Work will begin shortly on four new classrooms and a covered outdoor learning area, with Gosford-based group Artel Constructions awarded the tender. The Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter says the school has been struggling to cater for its expanding student population. Construction is expected to wrap up in early 2020. (audio in parts)

COUPLE FIND THEMSELVES STUCK ON LIGHT RAIL DIVIDER

It seems cyclists aren’t the only ones having trouble adjusting to Newcastle’s light rail set-up. This morning, a couple on their way home from the beach found themselves stranded at a Hunter Street intersection, after their car mounted a concrete divider. And while a four-wheel-drive might have made short work of it, the small hatchback ended up stuck for some time. Eventually, a group of construction workers got the couple back on their way. NEWCASTLE MAN KILLED IN MOUNTAINEERING ACCIDENT

A Newcastle man has fallen to his death while climbing in the Himalayas. Michael Davis was descending Ama Dablam near Mount Everest in Eastern Nepal on Thursday, when a rock fall cut his safety rope. The 33-year-old’s body was retrieved by air and taken to Kathmandu for a post-mortem. He was a part of a group of 15 people climbing the 6812m Himalayan peak. Mr Davis’ family is understood to be travelling to Nepal today, to accompany his body home. A keen climber, Michael was a graduate of the University of Newcastle, where he was a member of the campus mountaineering club.

DONATED SOLAR PANELS FOR CARRINGTON BOWLING CLUB

It’s struggled to make ends meat for years, but things are starting to look up for one of Newcastle’s most beloved watering holes. On Saturday, Carrington Bowling Club received almost $11, 000 in donations towards complete solar power. The funds came from Climate Action Newcastle, the community and the state government. “Ten years ago we were 300,000 in debt and it didn’t look like the club would survive, but as the time’s gone on, we’ve clawed back we’re now up to our fourth year of profit in a row.” – Jaci Lappin, Carrington Bowling Club Manager.
