MAN WINCHED TO SAFETY FROM CAVES BEACH

For the second time in a week, a rider’s been flown to hospital from the Port to Port Mountain Bike race, with a man winched to safety this morning from bushland, near Caves Beach.

The 35-year-old suffered several fractured ribs after coming off his bike.

Westpac Rescue Helicopter crewman, Todd Mulville said the chopper was called in due to his remote location.

“About two kilometres south of Caves Beach surf club, off the coastline itself, so it was pretty rugged, but from our point of view it was pretty low terrain so we had the opportunity to bring the aircraft in to a fairly low hover – around 20 to 30 feet – and winch the gentlemen out.”

The man was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition.
