MELLING FINISHES FIFTH IN RIO PRO

Lennox Head’s Adam Melling has finished fifth at the Rio Pro, his best result so far on the 2016 World Tour. The 31-year-old eliminated Michel Bourez in his round five heat to book a quarterfinal berth against Gabriel Medina. But the Brazilian stole the show, with Melling only able to produce a two-wave total of 6. The result moves him 24th overall. (NO AUDIO)

RYAN CALLINAN MAKING THE MOST OF HIS TIME IN RIO

With the women wrapped up in Rio, the wait is finally over for Merewether’s Ryan Callinan. A healthy swell is predicted for the closing stages of the men’s event, and the 23-year-old has been putting his free time to good use, taking in some landmarks, while also fine-tuning his aerial skills. Callinan will face local hope Caio Ibelli in round three.

BANTING INTO ROUND 3 OF RIO PRO

Port Macquarie’s Matt Banting is into the third round of the Rio Pro, producing his best performance of the season against American Kolohe Andino. Banting posted a two-wave total of 14.76, beating the world number four by just 0.1. “The first wave, that 7 and a half or whatever I got, I sort of surfed a little bit soft on the first turn and it was just such a good wave, I didn’t want to fall and kind of just put something on the board,” Banting said.
