An elderly woman has died, after being hit by a car at Port Stephens this morning. Emergency services were called to a home on Guyang Street, Corlette at around 9:45, following reports the woman had been reversed over in a driveway. Despite attempts to resuscitate her, she died at the scene. The male driver was uninjured and is speaking to police – a report will be prepared for the Coroner.

Emergency services scrambled to Newcastle Airport at Williamtown when a Virgin Australia plane raised the alarm about a fire warning activation in a cargo hold. The Boeing 737 was en-route from Brisbane to Sydney when it diverted to Newcastle, landing safely just after 12:30 this afternoon. In a statement, Virgin Australia said, “Virgin Australia flight VA938 from Brisbane to Sydney has landed safely after diverting to Newcastle Airport this afternoon following the activation of warning light in the cargo hold.” The landing triggered a large scale response from emergency services, including Fire & Rescue, Ambulance, RFS, SES, alongside fire crews from the RAAF. The body of a man reported missing from Port Stephens last week has been found south of Coffs Harbour. A passing motorist made the discovery at around 6 o’clock on Friday morning, after noticing a vehicle down an embankment, near the on-ramp to the Pacific Highway at Raleigh. Police were notified, and located the body of the 90-year-old man. He’d been reported missing from his Corlette home on January 17. His death is not being treated as suspicious. (VISION ONLY)

Police are seeking the help of the public to locate a man missing from Port Stephens. Barry Greentree was last seen at his home on Sailfish Street at Corlette at around 11 o’clock last Thursday morning. It’s believed the 90-year-old could be headed for Tamworth or Casino in a blue Hyundai sedan with NSW registration BSF-74H. He’s described as being of Caucasian appearance with a solid build, around 160cm to 165cm tall, with grey hair and blue eyes. Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A man is dead, and two women injured, following a head-on crash north of Newcastle this morning. It’s understood the man was driving a hatchback which collided with an SUV, while overtaking on Medowie Road at Williamtown shortly before 11:30. Bennett’s Beach at Hawks Nest was closed for an hour this morning after a 3.1 metre great white was spotted from the air. The shark alarm was sounded at 11.30 as patrol members from Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Club cleared swimmers from the water. An IRB team worked with the air crew to track the shark until it was safe for swimmers to return to the water. (Vision only – sound in parts)
