TAFE students in lockdown amid police operation in Northern NSW

A man has been taken into custody after a siege locked down a TAFE campus in Northern NSW.

The 45-year-old man was arrested by the Tactical Operations Unit about 2pm today after police were called to a private property on the Bruxner Highway in Wollongbar near Lismore.

“He has been taken to Lismore Base Hospital under police guard,” NSW Police said in a statement.

“The Bruxner Highway will remain closed for some time.”

NBNNews understands power was cut to the nearby TAFE while police searched for an armed man.

A helicopter, negotiators and the Tactical Operations Unit are involved in the police operation.

The incident began when emergency services were called to the property due to welfare concerns about 8am.

“As a result of the ongoing operation, the Bruxner Highway is closed in both directions between Sneaths Road and McLeans Ridges Road,” NSW Police said in a statement.

“An exlusion zone is in place, those in the vicinity of the Bruxner Highway and Lindendale Road intersection are advised to stay indoors,” police said.

“However there is no ongoing risk to the public.”
