FAR NORTH COAST RUGBY UNION ROUND 6 WRAP

The Pioneers remain undefeated after a round five Far North Coast Rugby Union win, against the winless Casino Bulls. They dominated early on and went into the break with a 35 point lead. When Wollongbar returned, it intensified its attack, piling on the points. The depleted Casino side suffered an embarrassing 80 point loss. Bangalow beat the Gold Rats, while Lismore suffered its fourth straight loss to Byron and Lennox got the narrow win over Grafton.

MACKEREL ATTACK ON FAR NORTH COAST

A 10-year-old girl was taken to Lismore Base Hospital yesterday afternoon, after being bitten by a fish on the far north coast. Initial reports suggested it was a shark attack, however a local surfer has said it may have been a mackerel. The incident happened at Lennox Head just after 5pm yesterday.

500 HECTARES SCORCHED IN LENNOX HEAD FIRE

More than 40 firefighters from the Rural Fire Service are working to keep a blaze at Lennox Head on the far north coast under control today. The fire is currently burning in the vicinity of Bundaleer Road, to the north west of Tobin Close and the north west of Camp Drew. Backburning will take place this afternoon to secure the fire perimeter. The blaze has already scorched through more than 500 hectares.

DRIVER KILLED AT LENNOX HEAD

Police are appealing for witnesses to a fatal smash just north of Lennox Head late this afternoon. While investigations are continuing it’s believed the female driver of a red Mazda convertible lost control on a bend heading south on the coast road, slamming into the path of an oncoming Toyota. Witnesses tried to perform CPR on the driver of the convertible but the woman, believed to be in her seventies, died at the scene. The female occupant of the other car has been taken to Lismore Base Hospital with minor injuries.
