FERTILISER MANUFACTURER FINED

A fertiliser manufacturer has been fined $30,000 for water pollution on Kooragang Island.
The Environment Protection Authority says a white-coloured discharge entered the south arm of the Hunter River on October 12 last year, after a pump failed on the Incitec Pivot Limited site.
The environmental watchdog issued a second penalty notice, after the manufacturer left fertiliser remnants from trucks along Heron Road two days later.
A spokesperson from the EPA says the company’s environment policy requires “all vehicles leaving its premises are clean, to prevent materials and wastes being tracked onto a public road. This is to stop pollution of waterways as the material may be washed into storm water drains and then into the river.”
