ANOTHER HUNTER STREET SITE COULD YIELD MORE ARTEFACTS

A Newcastle University historian believes a Hunter Street site could yield hundreds more aboriginal artefacts.

Gionni Di Gravio says the old Empire Hotel could be a treasure trove for archaeologists.

Across the road is Australia’s largest KFC, where more than 5,500 relics dating back 6,700 years were discovered just before the outlet was built.

he told NBN News today, “When it comes to aboriginal history dating back thousands of years we don’t care. It’s just a pile of rocks – I find that disrespectful.”

He says such history deserves better acknowledgement.

“It wouldn’t have killed them to put a glass floor in, it wouldn’t have hurt to have part of KFC turned into a museum.”
