Police say an 11-year-old girl riding a bike screamed and rode away when she was approached by a man driving a car in Mullumbimby late yesterday.
A bystander who went to investigate was allegedly assaulted by the driver, but was able to detain him until police arrived.
A 24-year-old was taken to Byron Bay police station and charged.
He was granted bail and will face court later this month.
