MAN BITTEN BY SHARK AT PORT MACQUARIE BEACH

A 26-year-old man is in a stable condition after being bitten by a shark at a Port Macquarie beach late yesterday afternoon.

At about 6.15 the man was surfing with a group of friends at Shelly Beach when he fell off his board and felt something hit his right hand.

The man was taken to Port Macquarie Base Hospital, where he was informed the wounds were consistent with a shark bit.

He was treated for puncture wounds to his hand and lacerations to his leg.

Police say an expert will attempt to identify the species of shark involved.

The incident comes less than a week after Port Macquarie teenager Zac Young died after being mauled by a tiger shark while bodyboarding near Coffs Harbour.
