12PM NEWS UPDATE: FEBRUARY 16, 2017

Hi there, Paul Lobb with an NBN news update.

  • Champion swimmer Grant Hackett has shared a photo of his badly bruised face, claiming his brother had beaten him. The swimmer seems annoyed that his brother Craig spoke to the media yesterday, following the Olympian’s Gold Coast arrest. The photograph appears to show Hackett inside a hospital room, though it is not clear when it was taken.
  • A report into the future of greyhound racing in New South Wales has recommended an overhaul of the industry. It includes a new integrity and welfare commission and a code of practice.
  • Quick thinking firefighters parked their truck over a burst water main in Melbourne overnight, when the torrent of water erupted into the front rooms of a house.
  • A State of emergency has been declared in Christchurch with a massive wildfire closing in on the city centre. So far one firefighter has been killed, 11 homes have been destroyed and a thousand residents have been forced to flee.
  • And extraordinary footage from Cobram in Victoria shows the moment a redback spider won a duel with a brown snake who became caught in its web. You can see the spider drawing the writhing snake into its web and then poisoning it.

Tune in to NBN news tonight at six.
