Newcastle hotel worker in serious condition after armed robbery

An investigation is underway following an armed robbery in Newcastle earlier today, leaving a man seriously injured

Around 4.45am this morning, police were called to a licensed premises at the intersection of Union and Bull Streets in Cooks Hill, after reports of an armed robbery.

Police have been told that two men armed with a machete and a baseball bat had forced entry to the hotel and confronted two employees.

The armed men fled with cash, they have been described as being of Caucasian appearance, aged in their 20s and wearing masks.

Officers from Newcastle City Police District attended, and a man was found injured on King Street. Police performed CPR until the arrival of NSW Ambulance paramedics.

The employee was reportedly injured while attempting to flee the armed men. He was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition, the second employee was not physically injured.

Crime scenes have been established with Union Street closed between Parry and Bull Streets.

An investigation has commenced into the incident.
