NORTH COAST MAN CHARGED WITH ALLEGED POLICE ASSAULT

A man will face court today charged with allegedly assaulting police after an incident on the north coast.

About 2.20am, police were called to Kendall Street, Byron Bay, after reports a ute was bogged.

Police attended found the driver, a 31-year-old man behind the wheel with the engine on.

When officers turned the vehicle off and tried to speak with the man, he allegedly became aggressive and attempted to assault the officers, pushing them away.

While trying to remove the man from the ute, he allegedly punched a two constables in the head.

The man was arrested and taken to Byron Bay Police Station where he allegedly returned a breath analysis reading of 0.083.

He was charged with several offences including assault, resisting arrest and mid-range drink driving.

The man was refused bail to appear at Byron Bay Local Court today.

Both officers were taken to Byron Bay Hospital for facial injuries, before being released.
