MORE UNIVERSITY DEVELOPMENT EARMARKED FOR HEAVY RAIL LINE
The state government has begun talks with the University of Newcastle to increase its presence in Newcastle’s CBD – a move which could see another building constructed on the former heavy rail line.
Three sites on Wright Lane in Honeysuckle have been earmarked, with two of them encompassing the existing car park and the rail corridor.
Planning Minister Rob Stokes made the announcement during a visit to the city today.
“There is a tremendous opportunity, you don’t get these very often.”
“Now is Newcastle’s time. And my great encouragement is that we work together and seize the opportunity,” he said.

Renee, they should seize the opportunity to start a light rail system! Not build over the ready access for something that every large population centre in Australia is crying out for; be bold, innovative and and LEAD – get cars, truck and buses OFF the road. Don’t spoil Newcastle’s remaining colonial and historical attraction; don’t knock down anymore classic infrastructure; no more incredible GPO debacles! Where are the infrastructure planners heads, really? I have lived all over Australia and am old enough to remember trams in large inland and other port cities, like Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo. Put more uni infrastructure in town by all means, but don’t make the people going there drive more cars and catch more buses to get there; this is a palpably stupid idea that has no vision.
