HUSBAND HAILED A HERO AFTER WOMAN WAS BITTEN BY A SHARK

A husband is being hailed a hero for saving his wife from the jaws of a great white shark in the state’s mid north yesterday.

Chantelle Doyle suffered severe bites to her legs while surfing with her husband at Port Macquarie.

She was surfing at Shelley Beach at around 9:30am, when she was bitten on her right calf and back of her thigh.

Witnesses say when the shark took hold of the woman, her husband lept on the shark and punched it several times until it let go.

The 35-year-old underwent several hours of surgery at John Hunter Hospital last night and is now recovering.

Beaches in the area remain closed.

Reporter Mia Tyquin will have the latest in the news tonight at 6pm.
