21 NEW CASES IN NSW AND FINES EXTENDED

The $5000 on-the-spot fine for those who cough or spit at healthcare staff has been extended to include all workers.

It follows the news of a 25-year-old man from Nowra on the South Coast being arrested overnight for allegedly spitting at police officers and other offences.

NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard announced the extension today during his daily COVID-19 update.

Mr Hazzard also announced 21 new cases in New South Wales, bringing the state’s total to 2936.

“A couple of months ago we thought we may have 700 deaths by now. But thanks to the incredible work of the NSW community and health workers we have avoided this,” Mr Hazzard said.

There are 245 people being treated in hospital, including 21 in intensive care and 17 on ventilators.

Mr Hazzard cautioned the pandemic was a “long game” and it was important to maintain restrictions including social distancing.
