CONTRACT AWARDED FOR DREDGING IN THE SWANSEA CHANNEL

Another 20,000 cubic metres of sand will be removed from the Swansea Channel, after the state government awarded a $250,000 contract for further dredging work.

Coolangatta company, Sandpiper Dredging, will carry out the additional work, having already removed more than 10,000 cubic metres over the past month between Naru Point and the Dropover.

Liberal MLC Taylor Martin says the channel has been cleared to a depth of three metres at low tide – just in time for the busy Christmas period.

Vessels have been running aground in recent months due to ongoing silting.

Dates for dredging have not yet been set.
