MAITLAND COUNCIL WARNS OF BLUE-GREEN ALGAE BLOOM
Residents are being urged to steer clear of Telarah and Rathluba lagoons, as well as the Walka Water Works at Maitland, due to a blue-green algae bloom.
Council has issued a high level alert for the three waterways.
Blue-green algae occurs naturally in fresh and saline waters, and outbreaks are common during summer.
The potentially-toxic bloom can cause nausea and skin irritation, and anyone who thinks they may be having an adverse reaction should seek medical attention.
