CONTROLLED EXPLOSION ROCKS PARTS OF LAKE MACQUARIE
A loud explosion and rumble, felt around Lake Macquarie suburbs yesterday, has been put down to a blast at the West Wallsend mine at Wakefield.
Residents from Boolaroo to Windale reported the shake just after 12.30pm.
A demolition crew, working on the mine’s closure, conducted the successful controlled explosion to bring down a reinforced concrete coal storage bin at the site, in what was considered the safest way to demolish the structure.
