Police have arrested and charged a teenager for allegedly choking and torturing a puppy in Casino earlier this week.
Lismore’s Animal Rights and Rescue group say the case highlights the need for tougher penalties when it comes to acts of animal cruelty.

We need tougher penalties when it comes to acts of animal cruelty and we need to give the police support to attend these cases of animal cruelty as many of them are directly related to other aspects of illegal behavior.
the RSPCA have one inspector for an area the size of Tasmania and many animal cruelty and neglect cases are left unattended, the public have lost confidence with the current arrangement .
Since I can’t tell u what I really think I will tell you what is known and that is that is animal cruelty is an extremely reliable predictor of future criminal ( violent ) behaviours and it needs to be treated as a serious societal risk, and that is without even factoring in our responsibility to protect those more vulnerable inhabitants of this planet, we need to get extremely tough towards this behaviour, it is a reflection of all of us!
What I really think is that animals are sentient beings and deserve the right to protection and care, just as we expect for ourselves.
An ordeal such as this puppy endured should be treated as it would be treated were it inflicted on a baby human. In my mind there is no difference.
This is a criminal matter and should be handled accordingly.
Laws must be brought into our society to protect animals, and must be enforced.
There is so much animal cruelty these days, it does seem to be increasing and is that because people turn a blind eye? It’s time to start looking at gaol time for people. Because down the track these ‘types’ will be in gaol for doing the same to people.
I stand and demand the Maximum Penalty for this abuse of an innocent and defenceless animal. Disgusting behaviour!
Tanya is correct in saying this type of behaviour is a forecast for their behaviour in years to come, we must keep an eye on these ones IN THE FUTURE.
