A man has allegedly threatened staff at a Lake Macquarie convenience store with a sawn-off shotgun.

Some time before 3:30pm yesterday, a man and a woman became involved in an argument with the employees at the store on Main Road in Argenton, before leaving the store.

They returned a short time later, with the man allegedly armed with a shotgun.

Staff locked themselves in a back room of the store and called police.

The pair left the store and were last seen walking north along Main Road.

Then around 8pm, a 34-year-old Argenton man was arrested and charged with armed with intent to commit indictable offence, intimidation and malicious damage.
