The Hunter has missed out on hosting a round of the Air Race Series, and was overlooked for the 2017 Rugby League World Cup.
But now the state government has decided to support Lake Macquarie hosting a round of the 2016 Offshore Superboat Championship, which has run on Newcastle Harbour in previous years.
The event will take place on October 15 and 16, and feature a range of additional community events around the lake.
