A VAN FOR VAN DAM

He’s been in plenty of battles on AFL fields across the Coast, but now Terrigal-Avoca icon Peter Van Dam is facing a challenge of a different kind.

His son was recently diagnosed with a rare genetic condition, and now the region’s sporting community is rallying behind one of its legends.

Fundraiser will be held on 2nd July at Davistown RSL.

  1. I am glad so many people are on board to help this boy. However can’t help but feel angry and disappointed.
I am a 23 year old mother, living in housing commission, giving everything i have to my kids. I live week to week with money. My son Kody who is 6, has a rare genetic brain disease Bilateral Perisylvian Polymicrogyria. He can not walk, talk, feed himself, dress himself. He suffers from 150 seizures a day on average and of a night 80% of the time he has seizure activity in his brain so the seizures do not stop. There is no cure, there is no answers because it is so rare!
I am on carers pension and i spend my days looking after him whilst struggling to pay my essential bills let alone the extra medical bills. To top it off the special equipment he needs like a special bed, activity chair, toileting chair, wheel chair, afos and thats not even the start of it. There are no funding options for me to get a disabled ready van for my son because they only give that if you have a car thats built in the last 5 years and on a pension i can not get a loan.
So because im not a star athlete just a struggling mum im left to stress daily about what im going to do without any support. This may sound selfish but i feel this support is needed alot more by people in my situation
