Former Newcastle Lord Mayor John McNaughton has been honoured by the state government, for his contribution to the city.
He’s been awarded the title of Emeritus Lord Mayor, in recognition of his work during the nine years he was in office.
Dr McNaughton was first elected in 1986 and has been praised for his leadership during the 1989 earthquake.
He’s also known for his strong stance on air pollution, and his extensive charity work.
