A critical incident investigation has been launched after a crash that followed a police pursuit at Lake Macquarie, which has left a man with critical injuries.
Around midnight, officers attempted to pull over a blue Holden Commodore at Gateshead.
The driver failed to stop, crashing into a power pole at nearby Windale soon after.
The car then caught fire with two occupants still inside.
A male passenger was released from the vehicle before the flames were extinguished, while the driver was trapped for some time.
He was treated at the scene before being taken to John Hunter Hospital.
Police are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.
