STATE GOVERNMENT REPORT RAISES RED FLAG AT PORT STEPHENS SAND QUARRY

A state government sand quarry audit has raised a red flag about the Macka’s Sand quarry, in Port Stephens.

The business was the only quarry in the Department of Planning report that recorded a high-risk non-compliance, with its approval conditions.

As part of the audit, Macka’s Sand was found to have issues relating to the number of truck movements on an alternate access road. But the Department says Mackas has since implemented controls on the weighbridge to monitor and control truck movement numbers.

Other non-compliance issues included current site practices of natural regeneration from adjacent vegetation. The department says a sand bank onsite appears to be working effectively but further analysis should be undertaken.

The audit found site and corporate staff demonstrated an understanding of the importance of environmental management and compliance with conditions of consent and that non compliances were in the process of being addressed.
