TEEN FIGHTS FOR LIFE AFTER BEING HIT BY A VAN MOMENTS AFTER A CAR CRASH

A teenager is fighting for life in hospital after he was hit by a passing van after crashing his car near Lake Macquarie, early this morning.

The 18-year-old was driving a Nissan X-Trail 4WD north on the M1 at Freemans Waterhole when he lost control of the vehicle and it rolled onto its roof.

The teen managed to free himself from the vehicle and was standing on the side of the road when he was hit by a Mercedes van also travelling north.

He suffered critical injuries and was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition.

The Mercedes van driver was uninjured and has been taken to Wyong Hospital for mandatory blood testing.

 

The M1 has been closed northbound at the Cessnock turnoff and traffic diversions are in place.

Police said officers from the Newcastle Crash Investigation Unit will conduct a full investigation into the incident.
