A 23-year-old man has been arrested after a woman was allegedly attacked with a hammer in central Maitland.
The incident occurred on Catherine Street at around 1:30pm.
The 38-year-old woman was taken to John Hunter Hospital with serious head injuries.
The man was arrested a short time later at a nearby car park.
Police initially responded to what was thought to have been a shooting, but there was no gun.
