The Avoca surfer edged out America’s Fredrick Patacchia with this gem.
“Yeah, look at this. Just grabbed the face of the wave there, stalling nice and clean. This is gonna be a good score.”
The next round will see Buchan go head to head with Owen Wright, while Copacabana’s Matt Wilkinson faces Taj Burrow.
Wright knocked out Umina’s Glenn Hall to move through.
