NURSE ON MURDER CHARGES REFUSED BAIL

Former Ballina nurse Megan Haines, who’s accused of murdering two women, has been refused bail.

It’s alleged Haines delivered fatal doses of insulin to 82-year-old Marie Darragh and 72-year-old Isobella Spencer which resulted in their deaths on the 10th of May 2014.

Her defence put forward a number of cases for her release including a low risk of re-offending and said she is the sole carer of two children, aged five and 13.

Marie Darragh’s (DARR-A) daughter sobbed with relief at the magistrate’s decision to refuse bail.

“I’m here for mum my sisters in hospital at the moment so she couldn’t be here and that I’m the speaker on behalf of my family and we’re just stoked that she didn’t get bail.”

The prosecution argued the accused had the means, opportunity and motive to murder the patients on that night at St Andrew’s Nursing Home in Ballina.
