CHILD IN HOSPITAL WITH MENINGOCOCCAL DISEASE
A child is in a stable condition at a Hunter hospital after contracting meningococcal disease.
Hunter New England Health has confirmed it’s the tenth case this year, but says there are no links to any previous cases.
There have been two deaths from the disease in the health region this year.
Public Health Physician, Doctor Tony Merritt, says it’s important people seek urgent medical attention if they develop symptoms.
“Meningococcal disease may be very severe and the community needs to be on the alert for its symptoms,” he said.
That includes pain in the legs, cold hands and feet and abnormal skin colour.
Later symptoms may include high fever, headache, neck stiffness and a rash of reddish-purple spots or bruises.
