Two mining giants will join forces in the Hunter, in a move they say will improve productivity, lower costs and maintain local jobs, amid tough market conditions.
Glencore and Peabody Energy have formed a 50-50 venture to develop an open cut thermal coal project between their existing United and Wambo mines.
Glencore will manage the combined operation using Wambo’s existing infrastructure.
The joint venture is expected to start in mid-2017, subject to government approval.
