150 STAGE PROTESTS AT NORTH WEST MINE SITES
A 27-year-old man has been arrested after chaining himself to the rail line near Sandgate bridge, blocking access to Newcastle’s coal export terminal.
The demonstration was part of a larger protest, involving five of Whitehaven Coal’s mine sites in the North West.
Around 150 people are staging protests at the company’s Maules Creek, Werris Creek, Tarrawonga, Rocglen and Gunnedah sites.
The Leard Forest Alliance is calling for the state government to halt work at the Maules Creek mine and also conduct an audit of the approval process.
Seven others have also been arrested.
