QUEENSLAND TEACHER DISRUPTS WORK AT MAULES CREEK COAL MINE

A school teacher from the Sunshine Coast has become the latest person to disrupt work at the Maules Creek coal mine in North West New South Wales.

Simon Wells, aged 55, used a metal pipe and chains to attach himself to an excavator at the site near Boggabri this morning.

Police arrested Mr Wells, making him the 159th person to be taken away by police following a series of protests in the area.

It follows a similar incident that occurred yesterday, where two women chained themselves to machinery.

The group is calling for a judicial inquiry into the approval of the Maules Creek mine, which started to be developed five months ago.
