Newcastle Beach was closed for just over an hour this morning, after a shark was spotted by surfers, 150 metres from shore.
Lifeguards believe it was up to two and a half metres long.
Nearby beaches were notified and the rescue boat immediately started patrolling the area as swimmers looked on.
But surfers weren’t phased, many choosing to stay in the water.
