THE AWARD GOES TO BALLINA JETBOAT SURF RESCUE

Saving lives is usually reward enough for clubbies, but Ballina’s jet boat crew has been singled out at the Surf Life Saving New South Wales annual awards night.

It beat seven other nominees to be named ‘Rescue of the Year’ for its efforts in April, when a Marine Rescue Boat capsized trying to tow another vessel to safety over the notorious Ballina Bar.

Five men were thrown overboard during the chaos.

“It was very dangerous rescue there was two and a half to three metre swells a strong outgoing tide and there was no moonlight that night.”

Crew members say they are honoured to have won the accolade.
