85 YEARS FOR AERO CLUB

The sky over the Hunter was the scene of an aviation milestone this morning, as the Royal Newcastle Aero Club celebrated 85 years of flying.

There was a formation of a World War Two Wirraway and three Pitts Specials, then two formations of Cessnas.

The aero club began in 1928 at Broadmeadow, and is now based at Rutherford.

  1. that wasn’t a two man australian wirraway but a USN grunman avenger in the middle a three man torpedo bomber with the USA Star on the wings, it also has the typical cut off wings of an aircraft carrier based plane 1943, for storage. Wirraways have a rounded wing as in late 1930’s design and they were land based. ALSO, Australian aircraft had a white ball surrounded by by a blue ring during WW2 as the RAAF found keeping a red center confused yank pilots who saw a red ball= jap!
