IRRIGATORS PLIGHT HEADS TO CANBERRA

The Member for New England, Tony Windsor, will question Prime Minister Rudd over the government’s failure to release funding to water groups in the Namoi Valley.

Irrigators, who lost up to 95 per cent of their entitlements, were promised $100-million in adjustment funding over four years, following a joint agreement with the state and federal governments.

However $3.4-million in community development money hasn’t been released.

A spokesperson for Water Minister, Penny Wong, said earlier this week the contract was an initiative of the previous government.

Her office is now seeking advice from the Department of Environment regarding the status of the project.
