BIRD COUNT BRINGS GOOD NEWS
The National Parks and Wildlife Service is wrapping up it’s week long shorebird count operation on the far north coast.
The annual population survey focuses on three endangered bird species, including the critically threatened Beach Stone Curlew.
So far the news has been promising – yesterday’s count around the Richmond River area produced some good results.
“I think we got over 100 little turns and around 50 pied oyster catchers – we only saw two beach stone curlews but we are continuing our survey tomorrow so hopefully we will see a few more.”
The results will be compared against last year’s data to identify any changes.
