DRIVER IN CRITICAL CONDITION AFTER ROCK THROWN THROUGH WINDSCREEN

A male driver is in a critical condition after being knocked unconscious by an object thrown from a stolen car near Glen Innes yesterday.

Police have charged five people over the incident that started when police pursued a stolen white Holden Commodore on the New England Highway at about 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon.

The chase was stopped after the occupants of the car started throwing rocks at the unmarked police car.

A short time later one of the passengers was spotted throwing rocks at oncoming traffic.

One of the rocks smashed through the windscreen of a blue dual-cab four-wheel-drive, knocking the 29-year-old driver unconscious at the wheel.

His father, who was travelling in the passenger’s seat, took control of the vehicle and stopped it 2km down the road.

The injured man was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital where he remains critical.

The five occupants of the stole car were arrested by police after it crashed into a patrol car on Wollombi-Wongwibinda Road.

The four men and one woman aged between 27 and 19 were charged with a string of offences including causing grievous bodily harm and using an offensive weapon to prevent detention.
