NSW HEALTH SAYS CANCER RATES AT PWCS ARE LIKELY COINCIDENCE

New South Wales Health says higher than normal cancer rates among Port Waratah Coal Services workers is most likely due to chance.

A study by the University of Newcastle found staff at the company’s Kooragang Island site were up to two or three times more likely to be diagnosed with cancer than the national average.

The health department now says the cancers included in the study were unrelated and therefore their occurrence was likely to be coincidental.

It also says because the disease is relatively common, clusters can occur within small populations.

  1. Who is the spokesperson for NSW Health? Did NSW Health look at the study to get these findings, if so who did this?
No other media outlets have run with this story, surely other local media would have found this a very newsworthy story.
