COASTAL WALK ON THE WAY TO CONNECT MEREWETHER AND NOBBY’S BEACH

Bathers Way will be improved to showcase Newcastle’s beaches, with plans for a six kilometre coastal walk to link Merewether Ocean Baths and Nobby’s Beach adopted by council last night.

It was part of a $2.5 million tender awarded by council for works at Merewether Beach.

The improvements will feature wider, shared pathways, new shade trees and structures, additional benches and picnic tables and viewing areas.

“Implementation of the Bathers Way plan will proceed immediately in Merewether with footpath widening on John Parade followed by the section between the surf club and the ocean baths.” said Jill Gaynor, Manager of Strategic Planning Services.

She says the project will be completed over a 10 year period but is already in progress with a viewing platform and wider pathways completed at the northern end of Bar Beach.

Tenders were also awarded for the operation of five kiosks at Nobbys, Newcastle, Newcastle Ocean Baths, Bar and Merewether Beaches.
