MORE CHARGES LAID OVER ALLEGED ILLEGAL SCHOOLIES BACKPACKERS

Byron Bay Council has pressed for more charges in relation to the running of an alleged illegal backpackers hostel which was being operated out of a Johnson Street property.

The landlord now joins tenant, Shai Major, in facing development without development consent charges.

Major failed to appear in Byron Court today, instead sending a letter of excuse.

Council shut down the property last week, after a raid allegedly found 19 people, including eight schoolies were sleeping on mattresses on the garage floor.

They were being charged $800-rent a week.
